Meeting recall is a key skill for successful marketers. It may seem simple, but research has shown that taking notes by hand is better than typing them on a computer. This was the finding of a University of California, Los Angeles study.

In marketing, there are a lot of details that need to be discussed and understood, so it’s worth thinking about how we take notes. I have always preferred taking notes by hand. Taking notes electronically, although faster, typically makes it harder for me to recall exactly what I wrote. This was one of the study’s conclusions as well.

Another reason to avoid taking notes electronically, is the distraction factor. Focusing while using a computer can be difficult. That next distraction is a single click away. It could be as simple as an email notification that pops up or as pestering as repeated Twitter notifications. Let’s face it, sometimes marketing meetings can be long and when that happens, we need to work to stay focused and avoid those distractions.

If you’re interested in taking notes by hand, but don’t want to carry around a flimsy spiral-bound, college ruled notebook, then please reach out to someone at d.trio marketing group and we will get a perfectly-sized, professionally designed notebook in your hands. Or, we could even take notes together kicking off our next marketing project – and we’ll bring the notebooks.
